Local park announces nature walk
The first session of Nature’s Hidden Surprises, a free monthly morning nature walk series in Tacony Creek Park, will be held on Wednesday, May 6, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Walkers will meet at I Street and Ramona Avenue. “Invasive Plants vs. Native Plants” will be the topic of discussion.
Three days later, on Saturday, May 9, there will be a free Bird Walk in Tacony Creek Park from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Walkers will meet at Roosevelt Boulevard and Bingham Street on the north side of the Boulevard near New Life Church. Expert birder Keith Russell of the Audubon Society will lead the walk which should cross paths with woodpeckers, chickadees, hawks and other species. Binoculars, coffee and doughnuts will be provided.

Free event for seniors at KleinLife

Glen Foerd open for 2015 tour season
Discover the people and stories behind the only remaining Delaware riverfront estate in Philadelphia open to the public, Glen Foerd on the Delaware, as it opens its doors for the 2015 tour season.
The mansion at Glen Foerd is open to visitors every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Guided museum tours provide insight into the lives of the former owners of the estate as well as the mansion’s butler and governess. Tours last about one hour and will include each of the mansion’s nine rooms.
Admission is free for Glen Foerd members, $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and students, $3 for children 5 to 12 or free for children under 5. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, Glen Foerd participates in the Blue Star Museum Program, providing free admission to active military members and up to five of their family members.

Major exhibit coming to the Parkway
Saint-Gobain, one of the world’s largest building materials companies, commemorates its 350th anniversary with a never-before-seen global exhibition, “Future Sensations,” which will be on display May 30 to June 6 at The Oval, located on the northwest end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
Free to visit, Future Sensations features five distinct ephemeral pavilions that take visitors on a sensory journey of science, storytelling and art that celebrates the past three-and-a-half centuries and offers glimpses into future innovations that will transform the world.
The touring exhibition makes four stops across the globe, including Shanghai, China; São Paulo, Brazil; Paris, France; and Philadelphia.
Each of the five pavilions weighs between 20 and 50 metric tons. They range in height from 13 to 32 feet.
Future Sensations will be complemented by a pop-up beer garden and a variety of food trucks. ••
Jeopardy winner can spell, too
Archbishop Ryan High School recently hosted its 11th annual invitational spelling bee for seventh-graders.
The winner was Ryan Elkins of Saint Charles Borromeo in Bensalem. Ryan, a former winner of Kid Week on Jeopardy, lasted 19 rounds, finally winning on the word “questionnaire.” He earned a four-year, $2,000 scholarship to Ryan.
In second place was Rebecca Moroz of Saint Anselm in Parkwood. Rebecca won a tiebreaker against the third-place finisher, Lara Serna, of Saint Charles Borromeo. She was awarded a four-year, $1,000 scholarship to Ryan. Lara was the winner of a four-year, $500 scholarship.
The event included 16 Catholic grade schools and 50 seventh-grade students throughout the Philadelphia and Bucks County areas. ••
